Summary: A unique picture book addition to resources for integrated studies: maths, conservation, history, change-over-time and storytelling. The story of the Takahē, once thought to be extinct, starts before the arrival of any humans, and with each turn of the page we see the change in bird numbers and the landscape, over the course of history. It shows the effects of Polynesian and European migrations, the introduced animals and pests, land clearance and development, and then later conservation efforts, and the programme to recover the takahē population. All the while the mathematical equations deduct and add to population numbers. The maths shows changes in takahē numbers in a practical way for children to understand and is a great addition to books that encourage maths literacy, in a local Aotearoa New Zealand setting.
